Interesting series to watch but I think I agree with the comments on time control. Even 5+5 games take the pressure off a little. When Kristin is able to see moves with enough time, surely a few 10 or 15+10 games would help her recognize when it's ok to play quick moves?
That was better. She was playing faster and mostly making good moves, and even the not so good moves were at least dealing with the threats she was facing. Good job, Kristin.
I think if she can play at that speed on a longer time format she should do ok. 5 mins is hard.
I feel like I started just like your wife and improved through your videos among other resources. My suggestion is allocating more time to longer games, I believe that after 20 games of 10 and 15 min duration she will be playing faster and more confidently in the 5 min games. Stay awesome Chess Vibes!
I think itโd a great idea for a series seeing a real player learning and getting better. Love your own Peter Patzer rating climb vids too but I bet this appeals to another section of your audience even more
As mentioned, Kristen is very brave to come on a Chess channel and share her learning experience! This was a really cool video, and Kristen… you are awesome for real! Just like your husband ๐
It's fun to get people close to you into chess and see their learning progress! I feel like she's improving rapidly even when the results aren't showing yet, once she gets more comfortable with the pieces, developing moves and the timer she'll do very well because she's learning the chess principles firmly which are pretty hard for beginners to implement into their game sometimes.
Please play at least ten minutes games, Kristin! When you're a beginner, have the extra nerves due to being filmed, five minutes is way too short. I will follow you if you play longer games, not these short ones. They are not fair, nor are they nice to watch.
I really dislike the clock personally, just stops me concentrating and I cannot play quick yet, not even sure I want to learn to be faster, I just want to take my time and find better moves ๐
No, you don't need to talk time management, you need to play longer games. Kristin, please get your own channel, I'll follow you, but I'm unfollowing your husband now.
The biggest thing she is missing is time…… you are forcing her into a time-format that is insane for her level.
5 minutes is not "kinda fast". It is *completely* unreasonable for a new player. She doesnt need repetition — she needs time to hone her ability to calculate. It is maddening that the coaching is more "play faster" instead of giving longer fornats and allowing her to see what happens with her plans when she has time to deeply consider her moves for 30 to 45 seconds _each_. She should be playing 30 minute games.
It's so great to see you teaching someone in person! ๐๐ธ I would LOVE to see more videos like that too. Kristin is so nice and is learning fast toooo, I'm so proud of heer <3
Kristin is doing great for a beginner!!! I can tell she's going to be really good with enough time and practice. But I think 5 minutes is way too fast at beginner levels. And hey, she can play me, and then her win rate/ELO will shoot through the roof LOL!!!
If you guys are open to video recommendations, chessbrah has a series called Building Chess Habits that I think does a really good job of taking the stress out of learning chess. It's beginner-friendly and mostly consists of example games to help you get repeated exposure to the concepts.
Nelson: There are lots of great chess teachers on this platform, but you and the one I recommended are the only two I've come across who don't overwhelm beginners with information. Thank you, and keep it up!
Kristin: Time pressure makes me anxious, too. It gets better with practice. The best lesson I ever learned when I was starting out was actually something Nelson touched on, and that's not to be afraid of losing pieces. If it's a fair trade, it's not a loss.
If both of you are up for it, I'd love to see more videos like this one.
Totally agree with everyone saying 10 minute games would be better for Kristin to give her more thinking time. You could still fast forward the analysis on these videos. Keep it up Kristin, sending positive thoughts & good wishes.
Is it better to learn with 5min games versus 10 or longer? I saw a video (maybe yours) that said play longer games so you have more time to think through yoppthe position.

What a lovely couple โค
Great content. 5 mins games for beginners are however very hard and stressing.

15/10 timer would be better for her. I am remebering my state from this video.
Play longer games until all the moves become natural…and much quicker??

OMG she is far more better than I was as a beginner!! Great guys ๐
10/5
do like hours of such training videos
โGet all your pieces out first.โ
*plays E3
If she watched your speed run first couple episodes Iโm sure it would help
Is there any sound problem in this video?

She needs to play 10 minute rapid. These 5 minute games are unfair for beginners.
Kristen is really doing well. With Nelson's coaching, she'll continue doing well. Keep at it Kristen. Longer games might be the way forward.

I feel like you should skip to 10 minute games at least, to give her more time to think about the game that's played
Gotta imagine that a longer time format would give more time to think. I know I feel rushed in a 5min game.
I am a beginner, and I dont play below 15 minutes, its to fast for ne
Definitely more of these! Iโm seeing an improvement already. Weโre rooting for you!

Well. There my be better teachers out there, idk, but you are (imo) very calm adn educational.
Ahjo. And NM. Hopefully GM in the future๐ช

I would never learn on camera, brave for sure!

Do some puzzel exercises. Great way to learn to see patterns.

Your wife should play a rapid game.
Because she was winning on material but losing on time.

Thank you for sharing your journey. Having just started playing myself it is reassuring to share in the process.

And she is already good enough to beat me ffs!!๐๐๐
She does look super nervous the whole time! I hope she gets treated to some ice cream!
Very well, Kristin!!!
This is a really great series!
